Saturday, September 3, 2011 is fresh and new

That's right, completely rebuilt, so refresh your browser, empty your cache and kiss the old, neglected site goodbye! What this means is that this site will now become the red headed step child that I will begin to neglect instead. It is now Even More Official than this official blog ... because it's a blog ... and because it's mine and costs money ... and stuff. Anyway, I'm not going to close this site or anything and because Google is pretty high on the cool factor scale they make it brain dead easy to do this - I'll continue to post new work. More importantly the prints tab will continue to grow here. Why? Because I already have it set up ...... So keep coming back, but don't be shocked if things don't change a lot. This was the vehicle that prepared me for the world of blogging and that was always its purpose. It is time now to move forward. Click the shiny button to visit O'Dell Studios dot com.

Studebaker Avanti

Dramatic, Dynamic ... and Docile ... and Absolutely Hideous. I give you my Avanti. I think that little line (minus the hideous part) from the old ads are trying to say that this car gives you lots of cool stuff while at the same time being drivable. It wanted to be a sports car ... I think, but this car came before the GTO and Mustang and the influence they had on the car world in general but specifically on the sports car. At the same time, it had the mighty Corvette to contend with - a sports car with a healthy following and already maturing design. So I injected my Avanti with a heavy dose of sports car design that's had several more decades to mature. This was a rush to finish and is on its way to the Street Rod Nats to be displayed in the Motorburg Design Center. Make sure you find those guys and check out all the cool stuff because I promise you don't want to miss it. It will be art central for the entire show and if you're needing a design done, you'll find more business cards in one single place than you can fit in your pocket. An actual, factory Studebaker Avanti will be on display along with art demonstrations by some of the masters and new talent alike. I had a great time last year, and this is the sort of place you'll see cars that you just don't see at your average car show that's for sure.
The mod list is miles long, but I left no panels untouched. I opened the mouth up even further up front, pushed the windshield back, hacked off a bunch of the roof to achieve a fast-back look, rearranged the character line in the mid section, flared out the fenders and completely re-envisioned the wheel arches. Enjoy!

Pantera Finished!

Chances are good that I'll post another version at some point to play with a couple other ideas, but it's done. I give you my track machine DeTomaso Pantera! Was lots of fun and I got a chance to play with carbon fiber. It you look at the front and rear spoiler you'll see what I mean. It turned out looking pretty cool I think. I'm also posting an Audi R8 done by my brother just a little while back as well. He put a bunch of little custom tweaks into it and the colors are just perfect. Even the most anti-two-tone enthusiast can dig on this color scheme ... to me, it just works.

De Tomaso Pantera Moves Ahead

I've been taking my sweet time with this project and you can see more updates than this at but it is progressing along at this point. Here is a to the actual thread. The body is pretty well complete, now I'll be putting in the stuff that gives it the race car vibe. I've gone back and forth over the rear spoiler but I feel that given the car's theme, it will need a race wing.

DeTomaso Pantera Project Progresses Forward

SLOWLY!! But I'm getting it rolling now. It's been a whole freakin' month since I posted but I've been off doing some new things. So yes, the Pantera was selected by the community. The car's theme is a Purpose Built Track Monster, but as I build it I am focusing on updating it to the point where it could very well be a modern car. It was built for so many years and had styling far ahead of its time in many ways, so I felt it was important to keep that in mind and remove all the things that date it while at the same time keeping all of the history and styling that makes the car so appealing. Making it purpose built looking is the easy part really because those mods are functional. My thought is that this could be the guy you see in a Ferrari on track day. It's obviously a thoroughly built car, but the owner isn't afraid to use it for the purpose it exists for. There is no reason for it not to look good. I may have talked about this already, but I noticed that the car has a definite shark face and I wanted to bring that out with my concept. So I've added the "eyes" and put trim in around the "mouth" just to accentuate those features. The winner picked the color, so by coincidence it is perfect for the shark theme. Enjoy and feel free to comment. The design will be steered by the community and everyone who sets eyes on it.

Community Project at Lat-g

Well if you direct your browser to and go for the artwork section in the forums, you'll find my little community project. It's a trial run, first time. It has come together pretty well and I've got a list of things I'll do differently next time around. It started with the first ten cars that people suggested - they went into a poll with a few styles and colors and everyone started voting. I set the poll to expire in 30 days so you've got unit May 1 2011 to get your vote in. The real question is, why vote? The poll results are public, everyone who votes, goes into a hat and a name will be drawn. That person gets to put the finishing touches on the car. See the deal is, the poll can only handle 18 options which isn't many when you figure all the things that can be done to a car. However, the winner will be choosing wheels and helping me figure out just how to modify the car's looks. Then when it's drawn, that person will receive a signed print of the rendering. Those prints will then go on sale right here at the O'Dell Studios blog in the Prints tab.

For anyone interested, a 70s De Tomaso Pantera is currently in the lead to be rendered as a purpose built track monster which is going to be great fun. I've got visions of fender flares, turn buckle-adjustable front splitters, sponsor decals, roll cages, the works. But I've also got visions of body mods. The car's shape lends itself to modification well and there are a few things (like pop-up head lights) that could use updates to bring the car into the 21st century. BUT! There are a couple other cars creeping up and tied for 2nd at this point, and the Pantera may not be on top in the end.

Hot Rod Art Prints Available!

Prints are now up and running!!! Head on over to the prints tab and make with the clickin! You'll be receiving either an 8x10 or 11x17 standard toner-based glossy print via USPS in a week or ten days, probably quicker, depending on how the ole print shop is running that day. PayPal protects us both and allows you to pay any way you want without ever giving any personal information to me. You don't even need a PayPal account to make a purchase.

Now, keep in mind that not all of our work is for sale as prints. We never sell prints of designs that we were hired to create. When you deal with O'Dell Studios your design is a one-of-a-kind and you become the owner of exclusivity rights while we retain rights to limit its distribution. This means neither of us can sell prints because the other owns half the necessary rights to do so, unless we agree upon something during the job, which is common for things like t-shirt design and company image work.

More Polish

Like any project it gets to the point where looking at it just won't help. A couple more ideas out.

Something Close to Finished

I think I'm just about gonna call it done. I'll have to have a proof printed and make sure it looks the way I think it should, but aside from that, not much else to do here unless I see something I hate about it between now and the weekend.
Just wanted to also throw up the sketch of Sasquatch. Nothing amazing, just a quick 20 minute job after doing a few doodles of people in suits with their arms crossed.

Emerald City Comicon Exclusive Draws Nearer

Nearer to completion. The Emerald City Comicon itself draws nearer too so the clock is ticking. But I think I'm getting there on my piece. It's actually kinda tough not to leave it a cool bit of automotive art but it felt like more was needed. My Sasquatch sketch (I'll have to post the sketch) turned out pretty good and the final colored version ended up the way I meant for it to so I felt like it deserved to be included. About all I wanted to accomplish was to make him look like he would be found in a comic book. I didn't want him over-rendered and I think it came out just right.

Emerald City Comicon 2010 Camaro Custom

OK so he's gotten pretty far along before I got a post up but this is AJ's portion coming together. Still a WIP but we've got a mild custom Camaro going on in the same hue I used. Getting away from the green overtones but with an obvious Seattle icon for part of the background. We've kept the mods mild on both of these modern muscle cars to maintain recognition but subtle improvements make them even more appealing than they already are.

It's starting to look like an image!

I still want to try a couple different things with the light streaks but this is my initial layout. Next I'm working on my Sasquatch!

Ford Mustang Lighting Effects in Photoshop

OK so here is some of the lighting done, wheels are on and looking damn fine. I don't normally go for all black wheels but it seems to be working here.

Emerald City Background Ideas

Nothing set in stone but these are my initial ideas for some of the elements of the background. The lighting effects are mostly a test run to see what I could accomplish, the Show Box marquee is at least the basis for what's to come. My side of the image is going to have heavy green (emerald) overtones, so my effects and marquee are going to mostly give off green light. I've got a bunch of cheesy Bigfoot movies showing at my place, and I must confess that I have in fact seen Boggy Creek, more than once.

First Teaser Image for Emerald City

1/31/11, 10:42 PM: Minor details, one of a kind mirrors, etc. This is getting close to the end of the work in Illustrator, and I'll be moving on to Photoshop for the final details, lighting effects and so forth. I'll also finish the wheels in Illustrator but that's like starting a whole new project. I might take a break between and start some of the background elements. I'm pretty excited about trying out some new Ps brushes!

1/31/11: Got another teaser for ya!

OK I like that it goes in order with new stuff up top so I'm changing this around.

Original post: What I've been working on tonight. It's late, I'm tired, I'm going to bed, but I'm really pleased with the direction this is heading and figured it was enough image to post. Subtle mods here and there on a '10 body Mustang. A, the other brother, also has a good start on his car, which I'll be posting a pic of soon too. So we've got a couple cool rides going, gonna be playing with some shiny new PS brush packs I picked up earlier today, and the setting is going to be night time with a heavy emphasis (it took me five minutes to come up with that word) on the lighting effects. Those of you keeping up with the blog are seeing this first. I'm holding off posting this to dA until we have even more.

Emerald City Comic Con

This is going to be one of those COMING SOON posts. Dunno if any of the zero people reading this are comic book geeks but the O'Dell brothers will be creating art to be sold at the Emerald City Comic Con coming up the first weekend in March .... unless that's wrong, in which case, I just draw stuff, not so much with the organization. It is of course Seattle themed since uh well .... it's the Emerald City Comic Con. You get it. Consider this a count down. The art work will be 2 pieces and I will be showing progress images here and at my dA page which can be found here .... Now the best part is that you don't get to know anything else and by the time you see the first image, you'll probably be able to figure out where it's going .... and we draw cars .... so don't toast your brain trying to sort it out.
